The relevance of the article is determined by the need of modern Ukrainian lexicography to harmonize usage and codification, especially in the accentological aspect, which serves as a marker of linguistic culture and national identity. In the context of creating the “Active Dictionary of the Ukrainian Language” (ADUL), the issue arises in stabilizing accent in terms where there is fluctuation between living language and codification inertia. The problem lies in the contradiction between the codified norm (логопе́дія) and the usage-based form (логопеді́я), which has functioned for decades in professional discourse.
The subject of the study is the accentuation norm of the term логопеді́я in Ukrainian and its evolution in lexicographic sources and language usage. The aim is to substantiate the expediency of fixing the usage-based form логопеді́я as the only normative one (particularly in ADUL). The method involves structural analysis, accentological description, comparison of lexicographic sources, historical-etymological and sociolinguistic analysis.
For the first time, a comprehensive explanation is proposed for the change of accent in a narrowly used term as a result of interaction between linguistic and extralinguistic factors: socio-political (persecution of pedology), historical (the path of the term in Ukrainian and Russian lexicography), and accentological (the tendency toward paroxytone accent in words of Greek origin).
The main result: it is proven that fixing the accent on the penultimate syllable (логопеді́я) corresponds to usage tradition, tendencies of Ukrainian accentuation, and the principle of harmonizing the norm with actual usage. Such an approach prevents the return of the outdated, non-native form (логопе́дія), which contradicts modern linguistic processes, since the balance between real usage and tradition is a stable principle of Ukrainian lexicography.
Prospects include developing criteria for stabilizing accentuation norms in active-type dictionaries, further research on accent fluctuations in terms of Greek origin, and forming a recommendation zone for modern lexicography aimed at overcoming irrelevant codification inertia.
