The article analyses the views of Ulas Samchuk on the book as a sociocultural phenomenon. He is the author of several nonfiction works about the book, including «Something or What to read?» (1943), «The Book» (1943), «The Life in Books» (1943), «The Book» (1949) and «The Fight for the Book» (1949). The article analyses his ideas about the functioning of the book in society, the role of reading for the spiritual development of the individual. The publicist argues that the book has universal information value. It is the catalyst for the incessant movement of people to new knowledge. It helps to establish a dialogue between different nations and different epochs. The book also has an aesthetic function.
Ulas Samchuk gives some practical advice to help form the contemporary need for continuous reading and active attitude to reading. Publicist says that the modern era is experiencing spiritual poverty, because people do not read artistic and intellectual literature. From his point of view, libraries play an important role in society. People must carefully choose books for reading, because they form the inner world. Ulas Samchuk claims that the book accumulates experience of the modern generations, forms the ideological priorities of the nation and creates it’s political image in the world.
