The article deals with the poem of I. Kotlyarevsky “The Aeneid” in its correlation with the picaresque literature. In view of the fact that the problem of the picaresque literature existence in the XVIII–XIX centuries has not yet been fully studied, such a study is considered to be a contemporary one. In his famous “The Aeneid”, I. Kotlyarevsky addresses the archaic origins of picaresque literature, its subsistence in Ukrainian folklore, and the top versions of the picaresque novel in European literatures of the XVIII century (novels of Alain-René Lesage and his many imitators). The authors of the article assert that the work contains the reception of the picaresque prose’s main features, because the story of Aeneas and Trojans’ wanderings corresponds to the main plot of the classic picaresque novel, which can be conditionally called a “travel story plot”. The psychological basis of the Aeneas’ image is the trickster archetype, expressed in the picaro, who successfully adapts in new social conditions. It is also assumed that in the poem one can see a deliberate reception of the central images of the original and translated picaresque novels of Western European and Russian writers.Downloads
