Abstract

The article proposes an author՚s reconstruction of the creating and publishing process of the little-known novel “Sun from the West” by Ulas Samchuk. For a long time the text was considered to be lost. The front-line analysis of the post-war newspaper “Svoboda” (New York) gave the author of this article the possibility to find out that the novel was fully published on the pages of this edition in 1949. The collaboration with the publisher Ivan Rebryk (Uzhhorod) helped to find out the missing dates on the New York newspaper’s official website.

The novel “Sun from the West” plunges the reader into the whirlpool of Khust՚s political and cultural life at the end of the 1930s, reproduces little-known facts about the Ukrainian Nationalists Organization members’s participation and preparation of the Carpathian Ukraine independence proclamation. The author of the article thoroughly studied the information about writer’s work on this novel. The main focus was concentrated on the analysis of newspapers, information from reference books, personal writer's correspondence.

The author of the article came to a conclusion that the work on the novel was started immediately after the Carpathian Ukraine’s defeat; several passages from the novel were published by various emigration magazines in 1940s.

The novel “The Sun from the West” is a complicated and at the same time interesting material for further literary researches.

The author of the article suggests that the genre nature of the novel, its documentary basis, the decoding of certain Ukrainian emigration’s life phenomena and the details of nationalist underground’s participation in the preparation of Carpathian Ukraine’s proclamation, the research of characters’s prototypes, etc are needed in further complex research.

The author of the article is sure that the textual comparisons of printed passages and the final version of the novel would be worth doing. The study of the epistolary heritage will help to reveal new evidence concerning the creation and publication processes of the novel.
