The relevance of the research is due to the fact that there are still no studies dedicated to the complex life and multifaceted professional activities of Ukrainian philologist, bibliographer, educator, editor, and publicist Antonina Strutynska. The purpose of this paper is to reconstruct A. Strutynska’s life story based on archival documents, memoirs, and press publications, as well as to highlight her teaching, editorial, journalistic, and library activities, and to compile a list of discovered publications. Several specialized scientific methods were used to achieve these goals: heuristic and biographical methods significantly supplemented A. Strutynska’s biography with new facts; the comparative method helped to compare events and facts, forming a coherent chain of events; and the bibliographic method was used to compile a list of articles authored by her.
As a result of the study of the archival documents from the collections of the Sectoral State Archive of the Security Service of Ukraine, personnel files from the archives of the I. Krypyakevych Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine and the Lviv National Musical Academy named after Mykola Lysenko, memoirs, and press publications allowed for filling in gaps in A. Strutynska’s biography and clarifying information about her teaching, research, journalistic, and bibliographic activities. The materials from surveillance and criminal cases, including protocols of searches, interrogations, court hearings, and court decisions, provided insights into the reasons and circumstances behind her arrest and demonstrated the cynicism of Soviet justice. The paper emphasizes that declassified documents, on the one hand, are the most comprehensive source for studying A. Strutynska’s life, and on the other, reveal the repressive mechanisms of punitive “justice” and tools of psychological pressure on arrested representatives of Ukrainian culture.
The scientific novelty is represented by the previously unknown pages of her life: family ties, details of her pedagogical and journalistic activities, arrest and stay in prison camps. Her cryptonyms were also uncovered, and a number of her authored materials introduced into scholarly circulation.
