Abstract

The subject of the study is the quotation in postmodern artistic discourse as the most common and frequently used means of intertextual connection between the metatext and the prototext. Is it possible to put stylistic eclecticism alongside other features of postmodern discourse? We believe so, as prose and particularly the novels of Vasyl Slapchuk serve as a vivid example of this: alongside the artistic narrative, we observe excursions into the history of literature, the psychology of creativity, the foundations of beliefs from various religions, journalistic digressions, and popular science fragments. A quote is not only a bridge between texts but also a means of transforming linguistic material; it also possesses text-forming, meaning-creating, and expressive functions.

The goal is to provide a comprehensive assessment of the phenomenon of intertextuality known as the quote, to conduct a systematic analysis of works dedicated to this topic, to pro-pose a derived classification, to illustrate it with examples from the texts under study, and reveal the meaning-creating, expressive, highlighting, and other functions of this means of intertextuality. Another objective of the research is to uncover the methods of linguistic transformation of a quote, to determine the role of phrases from precedent texts used in artistic texts, and establish the interconnection of the quote with other concepts of intertextuality, particularly the «text within a text».

The subject of the research includes the entire discourse of the author’s major prose: the novels Wildflowers (2003), Autumn Behind the Cheek (2007), the autocommentary The Book of Oblivion (2013), That Same Dust of the Road (2015), the quote collection Novel & Novel (2019), and the fantasy novel The Trampled Grass of Heaven (2021).

As a result of the study, based on certain classifications by previous scholars, which only partially reproduced the typological diversity of quotes, by applying the mathematical method of combinatorics and analyzing the linguistic material of the subject of the research, we identified five main types of quotes in the artistic language of Vasyl Slapchuk’s prose. We propose to examine their linguistic expressions and artistic-aesthetic objectives. For this study, we utilized general scientific methods, including the descriptive and combinatorial approaches.
