The subject of the study in this article is the emigrant’s identity in Yurii Kosach’s novel “Aeneas and the lives of others”. The paper aims to outline paths the characters choose in the circumstances of groundlessness and clarify the peculiarities of artistic representation of the emigrant’s identity in the novel. The methods of structuralism, semiotics, literary hermeneutics and anthropology, existentialistic model in literary theory are used in the article. The research novelty of the paper lies in the problematization of being-in-exile as precondition for the emigrants’ recomprehension of their own identity as well as in highlighting the peculiarities of chronotope, intertextual dialogue and narrative structures of the work in relation to the problem of identity.
The study shows that the emigrants, uprooted from their homeland, take it as something exotic; they hear their ancestors’ voice but at the same time seek to forget the past. Forced to travel around Europe, the characters feel nostalgic for the previous epochs; they cannot manage to find a new home as a space of safety; even financial stability does not save them from inner emptiness. The intellectual characters in exile can identify themselves via research activity, choose the path of return to their homeland for participating in the armed resistance or feel natural in the role of the witness of “others’ lives” and the voice of a generation. Ambivalence of the emigrant’s identity in the novel correlates with the narrative fragmentariness, mental mapping of the landscape, references to the texts of culture (myth of Antheus and myth of Phoenix, ancient Persian mythology, Ukrainian and world masterpieces), the characters’ reflections on art, historiosophical, ontological, and axiological issues.
Representation of the emigrant’s identity in the novel is related to the interpretation of this problem in Ukrainian émigré literature in general that makes studying this issue a promising area in literary criticism.
